The game does look pretty good, if a bit cartoonishly stylized, and there are lots of contextual buttons for things like taking cover and hoping into vehicles that will smartly pop in and out depending on what you're close to. To Gangstar: New Orleans' credit, there are some other worthwhile things happening here. It's a freemium mechanic that works well within the structure of an open world crime thingy type game.

I also appreciate how you can earn/randomly draw things like weapons and vehicles, then upgrade them using certain items and spending a bit of cash. You can complete missions to earn rewards, with faster clear times earning more stars (up to 3) and more stars meaning better earnings, which I like because it gives missions more meaning than just progressing the story. Yeah it's basically GTA with freemium elements, but the concept sort of makes sense. I want to be clear and state upfront that I actually like the idea behind this newest Gangstar. Regardless, this is the first Gangstar I've touched in a long time - and I'm far from impressed.

The Gangstar series has been a thing for several years at this point, but I've honestly not given much thought to any of the games up until now. Despite the price tag of zero dollars (to download, anyway), you're much better off buying an official GTA. Gangstar: New Orleans is a sound idea on paper but sort of a mess in practice. To my knowledge this isn't really explained anywhere, but it'll make your life easier.

If your health close to zero, tap the Medkit icon (just under your health bar) to heal up. No matter where you hide, you're probably going to take damage during a shootout. Don't given them the opportunity to get behind you! They aren't super smart but they will try to take cover and get a better angle on you when they can. It's better than having to reload in the middle of being shot at. If you have a moment of quiet before encountering more enemies, tap the weapon icon in the top-right corner of the screen to reload your selected firearm. This should give you a good idea of where you can hide from the inevitable hail of gunfire. The little 'cover' button will activate whenever you're close enough to something you can put between you and bullets, and a similar icon will appear on the objects themselves as you near them. You can't complete a mission if you're dead, right? Your character is given a numerical rating based on the overall strength of their weapons, and if your stuff isn't powerful enough you're likely to have a more difficult time of things. Once you meet the requirements you can totally take advantage of the higher risk/higher rewards thing. You can't attempt Hard until you beat the mission on Normal with at least one star, and you can't try Expert unless you beat Hard with at least one star. Play on Hard (or Expert) for even better rewards.If you come up short in the first attempt, you can try again until you finish fast enough. Replay missions to try and earn better times.Try to keep this in mind if you want to earn three stars and the best loot. The faster you finish, the better your rewards. Missions have timers that keep track of how long you take to complete them. Completing missions will be your bread and butter while you try to expand your nefarious influence.
